What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students record money entering and leaving an account and keep a running balance. They use addition and subtraction to track deposits, purchases, withdrawals, and money moved between accounts.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students place each transaction in the correct column and update the balance after every entry. They calculate an accurate ending balance and can find where an incorrect balance began.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add withdrawals or subtract deposits. They may treat a transfer as new money, forget to record it, or calculate each balance from the starting amount.

How to Assess It

Give students a register with a $240 starting balance, a $35 deposit, a $62 withdrawal, and a $40 transfer out. Ask them to record each transaction and find the ending balance.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs transaction cards, play money, and a blank register, then have them record each card and update the balance.

  2. Ask students to explain in writing why transferring money between two accounts does not change the total money owned.

  3. Play Register Relay, where teams solve one transaction at a time and check the previous running balance before passing the register.

  4. Use a sample bank statement and register to identify a missing purchase, an unrecorded deposit, and the corrected balance.
