What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students organize income, spending, deposits, and withdrawals in a clear record. They calculate and update the balance after each transaction, then use the record to answer money questions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students enter dates, descriptions, money in, money out, and updated balances in the correct columns. Their calculated balance matches the money available after every transaction.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may record only purchases and forget deposits or income. They may confuse the transaction amount with the new balance, or add when they should subtract.
How to Assess It
- Give students a starting balance of $40 and three transactions: earn $12, spend $9, and spend $15. Ask them to complete a ledger and state the ending balance.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs play money, receipts, and deposit slips, then have them record each transaction in a paper ledger and update the balance.
Ask students to write why a person should record a purchase immediately rather than waiting until the end of the week.
Play Ledger Relay, where teams draw transaction cards and race to enter each item accurately before checking balances together.
Have students track a pretend weekly allowance, including earnings, purchases, savings deposits, and the balance left at the end.
