What Students Need to Do
- Students sort two-dimensional figures into groups based on shared properties. They use a Venn diagram, tree diagram, or nested chart to show how smaller groups fit inside larger groups.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly place shapes in broad and narrow groups, such as quadrilaterals, parallelograms, rectangles, and squares. They explain each placement using sides, angles, or parallel lines.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a shape can belong to only one group. They often miss that every square is also a rectangle and a rhombus. They may sort by appearance instead of side and angle properties.
How to Assess It
- Give students a square, rectangle, rhombus, and parallelogram. Ask them to place each in a nested organizer and justify one placement with properties.

Give pairs shape cards and string loops, then have them build nested groups labeled quadrilateral, parallelogram, rectangle, rhombus, and square.
Ask students to explain in writing why every square is a rectangle but not every rectangle is a square.
