What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use parentheses and brackets to decide which part of an expression to calculate first. They apply operation rules in order and record clear intermediate steps.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students work from the innermost grouping outward. They then complete multiplication and division, followed by addition and subtraction, moving left to right when operations have equal priority.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may calculate strictly from left to right or ignore brackets. They may also multiply before division automatically, rather than handling equal-priority operations from left to right.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Simplify 48 ÷ [2 × (3 + 1)] + 5. Show each step and circle the operation completed first.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs number and operation cards plus two hoops; students build nested expressions, then simplify them one layer at a time.
Compare 24 ÷ [2 × (3 + 1)] and (24 ÷ 2) × (3 + 1); explain why the answers differ.
Run an error hunt with four worked expressions; teams circle the first incorrect step and replace it with a correct step.
Model two boxes with three packs of four markers each, plus five loose markers; write and simplify the matching expression.
