What Students Need to Do: Students explain that parentheses and brackets group parts of a numeric expression. They describe which grouped part is considered first, including groups placed inside other groups.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students identify which part of an expression is grouped and explain why it is handled together. In nested expressions, they correctly describe the order from the innermost group outward.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat grouping symbols as decoration and calculate only from left to right. They may think brackets mean a different operation or miss that the innermost group is handled first.
How to Assess It: Give the exit ticket: “In 18 ÷ [3 + (4 - 2)], explain what the parentheses and brackets tell you to calculate first and next.”

Lesson moves

Give pairs number cards and operation cards, then have them place string loops and craft-stick brackets around operations to show different groupings.
Ask students to explain how 20 ÷ (2 + 3) differs from (20 ÷ 2) + 3 without calculating first.
Play Grouping Match, where students pair expression cards with word cards describing which operation must be completed first.
Use a shopping total with a coupon, tax, and multiple items, then discuss where grouping symbols make the calculation clear.
