What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students represent multi-step situations with strip diagrams and equations that use a letter for an unknown. They connect input-output tables to number rules and patterns. They use models and formulas to calculate rectangle and square perimeter and rectangle area.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose operations in the correct order and use a letter for the missing quantity. They can state a table rule, extend the pattern, and explain how position affects each value. They use rectangle and square formulas accurately and include correct units.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat the letter as a label instead of an unknown value. They often confuse area with perimeter, add for area, or multiply for perimeter. In tables, they may look only at changes in outputs and ignore how each input relates to its output.

How to Assess It

Give a three-part exit ticket: model a two-step story with an equation, complete an input-output table, and find a rectangle’s area and perimeter. Require labels and one sentence explaining each rule.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build rectangles with square tiles and string, then record length, width, area, and perimeter to identify formulas.

  2. Ask students to explain how a strip diagram and an equation show the same two-step story problem.

  3. Play Rule Detective with input-output cards, where partners identify the rule, fill missing values, and justify their answers.

  4. Plan a rectangular garden by calculating soil needed for its area and fencing needed for its perimeter.
