What Students Need to Do: Students explain that people earn money by doing work and use it to pay for items and services. They separate needs from wants and make spending choices when money is limited.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a worker, an amount earned, and several purchase choices, students can explain where the money came from. They can identify needs, identify wants, and make a choice that stays within the amount earned.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think income is any money they have, including gifts or borrowed money. They may label every desired item as a need or think a debit card provides unlimited money.
How to Assess It: Give students a picture of a worker earning $10 and three purchases: bread for $4, medicine for $5, and a toy for $7. Ask them to circle two needs the worker can afford and explain where the money came from.

Lesson moves

Give pairs $10 in play money and picture cards for food, medicine, toys, and services, then have them choose affordable purchases.
Ask, "Would you buy lunch or a new ball first if you had only $6?" Students explain their choice in one sentence.
Play Needs or Wants Corners by showing item cards and having students move to the matching corner, then explain one choice.
Use a grocery ad to plan how a worker could spend $15 of earned money on needed items before choosing a wanted item.
