What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect work with money people receive. They name ways people may earn money, such as making goods, providing services, or completing paid tasks.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name several jobs or tasks that may bring payment and explain who pays for the work. The student can tell the difference between earning money and receiving a gift.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think money simply comes from banks or stores. They may assume every helpful task earns pay, or that gifts and allowances are always earned.
How to Assess It
- Show pictures of a baker selling bread, a child receiving birthday money, a dog walker, and a child opening a gift. Ask students to circle the two examples of earning money and explain one choice.

Ways to Teach It
Set up classroom jobs with play money, then have students complete each job and collect the agreed payment.
Have students draw one way a person earns money and dictate a sentence explaining the work.
Play Income Match by pairing worker cards, such as baker or dog walker, with pictures of the work they do.
Interview a school employee about their job, then list the tasks they do to earn their pay.
