K.6 is a knowledge and skills statement. These are the student expectations under it.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen to, read, or view different sources and respond by speaking, drawing, or writing. They make personal connections, retell key ideas in order, and use details from the source. They also use newly learned words when they respond.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can retell key events in order without changing the main meaning. The student can draw, speak, or write a relevant response, point to supporting details, and use a new word correctly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may share an unrelated story instead of connecting it to the source. They may retell events out of order, give an opinion without evidence, or repeat new words without understanding them.
How to Assess It
- Read a short picture book, then ask, “What happened first, next, and last? Show one picture detail that supports your answer.”

Ways to Teach It
Give students three event cards from a familiar story to arrange, retell, and illustrate with crayons and folded paper.
After a read-aloud, ask, “What does this remind you of, and which part of the book made you think that?”
Play Evidence Hunt by naming a claim and having students point to a matching picture or detail in the text.
Read a cafeteria menu together, then have students draw a choice and explain it using one new food word.
