What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain personal connections and write brief responses that show they understood a text. They use a specific detail as evidence and retell ideas in a clear order. They also draw, write, speak, and use new words to respond.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student retells the main events in order and keeps the original meaning without copying. The student writes a clear response, supports it with an accurate detail, and uses new vocabulary correctly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list events out of order or include every small detail. They may give an opinion without text evidence or copy sentences instead of paraphrasing. They may use a new word in a way that does not fit.
How to Assess It
- After a short read-aloud, give this exit ticket: “Retell the main events in order, then write one response supported by a text detail.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs four event cards from a familiar story; students order them, retell the story, then draw and caption the ending.
Ask, “What did this text remind you of, and which detail created that connection?” Students share, then write two sentences.
Play Evidence Match: students pair response cards with supporting detail cards and explain each match using one new vocabulary word.
Read a school lunch menu; students write one useful comment, name a menu detail, and use the words option and ingredient.
