What Students Need to Do: Students choose recently learned words when speaking or writing about a text, image, video, or read-aloud. They use each word in a way that fits its meaning and the situation.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students select a recently learned word that fits their idea. They use it correctly in a clear spoken or written response and can explain what it means.
Common Misconceptions: Students may use a new word because it sounds impressive, even when it does not fit the meaning. They may also repeat a word from the text without showing they understand it.
How to Assess It: Give students the words "enormous," "relieved," and "observe." Ask them to answer, "How did the character feel after finding the lost dog?" using one word correctly.

Lesson moves

Give pairs picture cards and new word cards, then have them match each word to a picture and explain their choice.
After a read-aloud, ask, "Which new word best describes the character, and what detail proves it?"
Play Vocabulary Switch by giving a simple sentence and asking teams to replace one common word with a fitting new word.
Show a weather report and have students use words such as chilly, humid, or severe to describe tomorrow's weather.
