What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use recently learned words to explain ideas from a text, audio clip, or video. They choose words that fit the meaning, tone, and sentence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose recently learned words that match their intended meaning and tone. They use each word correctly in original sentences when discussing or writing about a source.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may insert a new word because it sounds advanced, even when its meaning or tone does not fit. They may also copy the source’s sentence instead of using the word in their own response.
How to Assess It
- After a short article, ask: “Use two words from this week’s vocabulary to explain the author’s main point.” Check meaning, grammar, and context.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs vocabulary cards and a short article, then have them place each word beside a paragraph where it could support a response.
Ask students to write: “Which new word best describes the speaker’s attitude, and what detail proves your choice?”
Play Vocabulary Revision Relay, where teams replace vague words in sample responses with accurate unit vocabulary and explain each change.
Have students write a product review using three new vocabulary words that accurately describe quality, value, and audience. What is the correct use of the word?
