What Students Need to Do: Students use recently learned words when they talk or write about something they read, hear, or view. They choose words that fit the meaning and situation.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students use recently learned words correctly when speaking or writing about a text, video, or presentation. Their word choices fit the topic, meaning, and sentence.
Common Misconceptions: Students may use a new word because it sounds impressive, even when it does not fit the meaning. They may copy a word from the source without showing they understand it.
How to Assess It: Give students three recently taught words. Ask them to write two sentences about the day’s text, using one word correctly in each sentence.

Lesson moves

Give pairs word cards and picture cards, then have them match each word to a picture and explain the match aloud.
Ask, “Which new word best describes the main character’s actions, and what detail proves your choice?”
Play Vocabulary Swap, where students replace an underlined common word in a sentence with the best new word from a word bank.
Read a school announcement, then write a reply using two recently learned words that fit the situation.
