What Students Need to Do: Students use recently learned words when speaking or writing about texts, videos, images, or presentations. They choose words that fit the topic, meaning, and audience.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students select a recently learned word that fits their purpose and use it correctly in speech or writing. Their response shows they understand the word’s meaning and context.
Common Misconceptions: Students may insert a new word even when it does not fit the meaning or sentence. They may also copy a definition instead of using the word to express an idea.
How to Assess It: Give an exit ticket with three recent vocabulary words. Students choose one and write a sentence responding to the day’s text, showing the word’s meaning clearly.

Lesson moves

Give pairs vocabulary cards and picture cards to match, then have students explain each match using the target word.
Ask, “Which new word best describes the character’s decision, and why?” and require the word in a complete response.
Play Vocabulary Challenge, where teams answer text questions and earn a point only when a target word is used correctly.
Have students write a short product review using two recent vocabulary words that accurately describe the item and their opinion.
