What Students Need to Do: Students use recently learned words when they speak or write about something they read, hear, or watch. They choose words that fit the context and meaning.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students use recently learned words accurately when speaking or writing about a text, video, or presentation. Their word choices fit the meaning, context, and audience.
Common Misconceptions: Students may force a target word into a sentence where it does not fit. They may also copy a definition, use the wrong word form, or confuse similar words.
How to Assess It: Give students three target words and ask them to write a two-sentence response to a short paragraph using one word accurately. Have them underline the word.

Lesson moves

Give pairs word cards and picture cards, then have them match each word to a picture and explain the connection aloud.
After reading, ask, "Which target word best describes the character’s decision, and what detail supports your choice?"
Play vocabulary sentence relay, where teams earn a point for using a drawn word accurately in a response to the text.
Students write a short review of a school event, game, or show using two target words that fit the topic.
