What Students Need to Do: Students use words they recently learned when speaking or writing about something they read, heard, or viewed. They choose words that fit the meaning and situation.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students use a recently taught word correctly when talking or writing about a book, video, picture, or read-aloud. Their sentence shows they understand the word’s meaning.
Common Misconceptions: Students may repeat a new word without understanding it or use it in the wrong situation. They may also choose familiar words even when a more precise new word fits.
How to Assess It: After a read-aloud, display three recently taught words and ask: “Choose one word and use it to tell something about the story.”

Lesson moves

Give pairs picture cards and word cards, then have them match each new word to a picture and explain the match.
Ask, “Which new word best describes the character, setting, or event, and why?”
Play Vocabulary Charades, where students act out a taught word while classmates name it and use it in a sentence.
During a classroom walk, students find an object or action that matches a new word and describe it to a partner.
