What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the genre of a literary text using evidence from its setting, characters, plot, conflict, and tone. They compare genre features and explain why a text may fit more than one genre.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can classify an unfamiliar text and support the choice with details about setting, characters, plot, conflict, or tone. They can explain when genres overlap and compare closely related genres.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often classify a text from one surface clue, such as a spaceship, a joke, or an old setting. They may treat short story as a separate genre, even though a short story can also be fantasy, mystery, or realistic fiction.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short unfamiliar excerpt and ask: Name the best genre, cite two details, and explain why one other genre fits less well.
