What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify whether a text is realistic fiction, adventure, historical fiction, mystery, humor, or myth. They use setting, characters, plot events, and purpose to explain the choice. They recognize when a text blends genres.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given an unfamiliar story, a student names the best-fit genre and points to at least two relevant details. The student distinguishes close choices, such as historical fiction from adventure, and explains possible genre overlap.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often label any exciting story as adventure or any funny scene as humor. They may call any old text historical fiction, even when its author wrote about contemporary life. They also confuse myths with all stories containing magic.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Read, “A clever raven steals fire from the sun and gives it to people.” Name the genre and cite two supporting features.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs 12 plot-summary cards to sort into genre folders, then require one clue from each card to justify every placement.
Ask students to write: How can one story fit two genres, and which genre best describes it?
Play Genre Detective: reveal three clues from a familiar book, then have teams name the genre and explain which clue is strongest.
Have students examine five library book jackets, label each genre, and check their choices against the library catalog.
