What Students Need to Do
- Students identify a story's genre by examining its setting, characters, plot, conflicts, and use of realistic or imagined events. They explain their classification with evidence from the text.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can classify an unfamiliar story and support their choice with specific details. They can distinguish similar genres and explain how a text may blend more than one genre.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may classify a story by its setting alone instead of considering plot, characters, and events together. They may confuse science fiction with fantasy, or historical fiction with nonfiction.
How to Assess It
- Give students three short story summaries. Ask them to name each genre and underline two details that support each choice.
