- Students select a grade-appropriate text that matches their interests and reading ability. They read without prompting for the set time and can explain what they read afterward.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose books based only on length or cover art, then abandon them without giving a clear reason. Some confuse quiet sitting, page turning, or skimming with focused reading.
How to Assess It
- Give students three minutes to choose a text, then read silently for 15 minutes. Ask them to summarize the section and explain why the text fits them.

Set out varied books and articles, then have students preview three and place a sticky note on the one they will read.
