What Students Need to Do
- Students choose a grade-appropriate text that fits their interests and reading ability. They read it independently and stay engaged for a set period without frequent prompting.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student chooses a suitable book without relying on the teacher to decide. The student stays focused for the assigned time and can briefly explain what was read.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose books only by cover or popularity, even when the reading level is a poor fit. They may switch books whenever focus slips or think independent reading means they cannot ask for help.
How to Assess It
- Offer several texts and ask students to choose one, explain their choice in one sentence, read for 15 minutes, and write a brief summary.

Ways to Teach It
Set up a book tasting with five genres; students preview each for two minutes, choose one, and read silently for fifteen minutes.
Have students answer: What made you choose this book, and what will help you keep reading when focus slips?
Run a reading stamina challenge where students add one focused minute each day and record distractions on a simple tracking card.
Let students use a library catalog and book reviews to choose a title as they would for reading outside school.
