What Mastery Looks Like
- A student selects a suitable text without teacher direction and begins reading promptly. The student stays focused for the set time and can explain key events, facts, or ideas afterward.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose books that are too difficult, then skim or give up. Some think independent reading means looking at pictures, switching books often, or waiting for teacher help with every word.
How to Assess It
- Offer several grade-appropriate texts and ask students to choose one, read for 15 minutes, then record the title, pages read, and a two-sentence summary.

Ways to Teach It
Set out labeled book baskets, then have students choose a suitable book, find a reading spot, and read silently for 15 minutes.
Ask students to write: Why did you choose this book, and what helped you keep reading when a part became difficult?
