What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose a book or other text that matches their reading ability and interests. They read alone for an agreed period and keep their attention on the text.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student chooses a text they can understand without teacher help and explains why it is a good fit. The student stays focused for the agreed time and can summarize what was read.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may pick a book only because of its cover or length, even when the text is too hard. Some switch books often, turn pages without understanding, or think silent reading means no follow-up thinking.
How to Assess It
- Give students 15 minutes to choose and read a book. Then ask them to write the title, pages read, a two-sentence summary, and why the book fits them.

Ways to Teach It
Arrange a five-book tasting, then have students choose one book and explain their choice on a sticky note.
Ask, “What helps you stay focused while reading, and what will you try when your attention wanders?”
Use a stamina ladder: read quietly for 10, 15, then 20 minutes, recording focused minutes after each round.
Let students choose a recipe, sports article, or how-to text, then read it to complete a useful task.
