What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose a grade-appropriate text that matches their interests or reading purpose. They read on their own for a set period and keep their attention on the text.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student chooses a suitable text without waiting for the teacher to decide. The student begins promptly, stays focused for the agreed time, and briefly explains what was read.
Common Misconceptions
- Some students choose books only by the cover, even when the text is too difficult or too easy. Others switch books repeatedly or turn pages without following the ideas.
How to Assess It
- Give students 15 minutes to select and read a classroom book. On an exit slip, have them record the title, pages read, and one key event or idea.

Ways to Teach It
Set out six varied books for a book tasting. Students preview each, record one interest clue, then choose one for 15 minutes.
Ask students to write: “Why did you choose this book, and what helped you stay focused while reading?”
Run a reading stamina ladder. Students read for 8, 10, then 12 minutes across three days and chart focused minutes.
Students choose an article about a hobby, read it independently, then share one fact they could use outside school.
