What Students Need to Do
- Students use words they have recently learned when speaking or writing about texts, media, and class discussions. They select words that fit the meaning, tone, and situation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose recently learned words that fit their purpose, audience, and topic. They use each word accurately in speech or writing and can explain why it fits.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may insert new words without understanding their meaning or tone. They may also use a correct word in the wrong form, such as using an adjective where a noun is needed.
How to Assess It
- Give students three recently taught words and ask them to write a two-sentence response to a class text using one word accurately. Have them underline the word.

Give pairs vocabulary cards to sort by meaning, tone, and likely context, then use each word in a response to a short text.
Ask students to answer, “Which new word best describes the character’s choice, and what detail supports your choice?”
