What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose a book, article, or other text that fits their interests, purpose, and reading ability. They read for an agreed block without repeated prompting and keep track of meaning.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student quickly chooses a text that matches personal interests and reading ability. During a 20-minute block, the student stays focused and can summarize the reading with accurate details.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose only the shortest book or assume any difficult text is a good choice. They may turn pages without following the meaning. Some switch texts whenever attention drops instead of trying a focus strategy.

How to Assess It

Run a 15-minute silent reading block. On an exit slip, students record the title, pages read, one-sentence summary, and why the text was a good fit.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set out six varied texts; students preview each for two minutes, then place a sticky note on the best fit and explain why.

  2. After reading, students write: What kept your attention, where did focus slip, and what will you try next time?

  3. Play a Focus Ladder: read silently for 5, 8, then 12 minutes, earning a point after each distraction-free round.

  4. Students choose an article tied to a real need, such as fixing a bike or choosing headphones, then report one useful detail.
