What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students inspect who created a source, when it was published, what evidence it uses, and what motives may shape it. They spot exaggerated claims, emotional pressure, and unfair statements about groups, then explain how those problems affect trust.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students point to author credentials, publication date, evidence, citations, and loaded wording when judging a source. They can identify exaggeration, fear-based claims, and unsupported statements about groups, then explain why those weaken an argument.

Common Misconceptions

Students may trust a source because it looks professional, appears first in search results, or matches their opinion. They may call any strong opinion biased or confuse emotional language with solid evidence. They also may miss stereotypes hidden in broad claims about groups.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Give students a post with an unnamed author, no linked evidence, and the claim, “Everyone knows this disaster will ruin our lives.” Ask them to identify two warning signs and explain each one.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs printed source cards to sort into trustworthy, questionable, and unreliable piles, then require one cited clue for each choice.

  2. Ask students to write: Which matters more, an author’s expertise or the evidence provided, and why?

  3. Play Source Detective by awarding points when teams spot missing evidence, loaded words, exaggeration, or unsupported group claims in short excerpts.

  4. Compare two online product reviews, checking reviewer identity, specific evidence, emotional wording, and possible financial motives.
