What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify when a source exaggerates, pushes feelings instead of evidence, or makes broad claims about groups. They explain how the weak reasoning affects the source’s credibility and support their judgment with specific words from the source.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given an article, ad, or post, students can locate exaggerated claims, feeling-based pressure, and unfair group assumptions. They can name the flaw and explain how it affects credibility.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call any vivid language hyperbole, even when it is literally true. They may treat a sad example as proof or miss stereotypes that sound positive. They may identify a flaw without explaining how it weakens the claim.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Label the flaw in “Only a heartless person would oppose longer lunch,” underline the loaded words, and rewrite it using evidence.
