What Students Need to Do
- Students infer several themes and support them with evidence within and across texts. They explain how character responses, setting, plot stages, and flashbacks shape events and outcomes.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can identify more than one theme and support each with relevant details from one or two texts. They can trace how character reactions, setting, plot stages, and flashbacks shape later events and the resolution.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often name a topic, such as friendship, instead of stating a theme as a complete message. They may treat the climax as any exciting event, confuse internal thoughts with external actions, or view setting and flashbacks as background details.
How to Assess It
- After reading a short story, give students four boxes labeled theme, character response, plot structure, and setting. Require one claim and one quoted detail in each box.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups event cards from a story to arrange by plot stage, then add a flashback card and explain how it changes understanding.
Ask students to write: How do a character’s thoughts and actions push the plot toward its climax? Cite two details.
Play Theme Match by having teams pair theme statements with evidence cards from two short texts and defend each match.
Compare a historical photograph with a story set in that period, then list three ways the setting limits or shapes the character’s choices.
