What Students Need to Do
- Students infer more than one theme and support each theme with details from the text. They explain character relationships and conflicts, analyze plot stages, and show how historical or cultural settings shape events.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can identify two reasonable themes in an unfamiliar story and support each with specific details. The student can trace conflict through the plot and explain how the time, place, or culture affects choices and events.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often confuse theme with a topic or plot summary, and they may assume every story has only one theme. They may call the most exciting event the climax, list character traits instead of relationships, or describe setting without explaining its effect.
How to Assess It
- Give students a one-page story and ask them to name two themes with evidence, label four plot stages, and explain how conflict and setting shape one event.

Have groups arrange event cards on a plot mountain, then connect character conflicts and setting details to each event with yarn.
