What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students break longer words into syllables and identify the vowel pattern in each part. They use those patterns to spell the complete word and check each syllable.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students spell familiar and unfamiliar multisyllabic words by using the pattern in each syllable. They can divide a word, explain each vowel spelling, and check the completed word.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may divide syllables in the wrong place, which leads them to choose the wrong vowel spelling. They may treat every vowel pair alike or miss silent e, r-controlled vowels, and final stable syllables.
How to Assess It
- Dictate basket, robot, compete, raincoat, market, and table. Have students spell each word, divide it into syllables, and label the target syllable pattern.

Ways to Teach It
Give students letter tiles to build, divide, and label multisyllabic words such as sunset, robot, complete, rainbow, market, and candle.
Ask students to explain in writing how syllable patterns help them spell the word surprise or teammate.
Play syllable sort relay with word cards, teams sort words by vowel pattern and then write each word from memory.
Use a school lunch menu to find multisyllabic words, divide them into syllables, and check their spelling against the printed menu.
