What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students hear and separate syllables, then choose the vowel pattern that matches each sound. They spell short and longer words using familiar syllable chunks and check each chunk.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student correctly spells words such as robot, basket, invite, rainbow, corner, and candle. The student can divide each word into syllables and explain which letters represent each vowel sound.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use one vowel letter for every vowel sound, omit an unstressed syllable, or double a consonant in an open syllable. They may confuse vowel teams with VCe patterns and miss silent e, r-controlled vowels, or final consonant-le chunks.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: Spell picnic, robot, sunshine, sailor, market, and purple, then draw a line between the syllables. Circle the letters spelling each vowel sound.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs letter tiles to build basket, robot, cupcake, rainbow, farmer, and candle, then split each word into syllable chunks.
Post robot, kitten, sunshine, train, storm, and table; students choose two and explain in writing how each vowel spelling works.
Play Syllable Bingo with teacher-called words; students cover the matching pattern and spell the word on a recording sheet.
Use a lunch menu; students find multisyllabic food words, divide them into chunks, and highlight the vowel spelling in each chunk.
