What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students break longer words into syllables and recognize the spelling pattern in each part. They spell each syllable, then combine the parts to write the whole word.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can hear and mark syllable breaks in unfamiliar words, then choose a spelling that fits each syllable. The student can spell words such as complete, cowboy, market, and table and explain the patterns used.

Common Misconceptions

Students may split a vowel team across two syllables or count silent final e as a separate syllable. They may use one familiar spelling for every long vowel sound. They may spell endings in station or table by sound instead of using tion or consonant le.

How to Assess It

Dictate rabbit, robot, complete, cowboy, market, and table. Students write each word, mark the syllable breaks, and label the pattern in each syllable.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Students cut apart word cards such as rabbit, robot, complete, cowboy, market, and table, then sort each syllable by pattern.

  2. Have students answer, "How does the syllable pattern help you spell complete and table?" using marked syllable breaks.

  3. Play Syllable Relay: dictate a word, then teams build it with letter tiles, mark breaks, and name each pattern.

  4. Students scan a school lunch menu, choose five multisyllabic words, mark syllable breaks, and circle the spelling pattern in each syllable.
