What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students break longer words into spoken syllables and match each syllable to a familiar vowel pattern. They spell the whole word by keeping vowel pairs, r-controlled vowels, silent e patterns, and fixed endings together.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can mark the syllables in an unfamiliar grade-level word, then spell each part from its vowel pattern. The student keeps vowel teams and stable endings intact and can explain spelling choices.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may split a vowel team between syllables or hear each vowel as a separate sound. They may overlook silent e or treat r-controlled vowels as regular short vowels. Endings such as ble and tion may be omitted or spelled only by sound.
How to Assess It
- Dictate picnic, robot, cupcake, rainbow, cowboy, market, and table. Students write each word, draw syllable breaks, and underline the letters showing each vowel sound.
