- Students break longer words into syllables and use spelling patterns to choose the vowel sound in each part. They blend the parts to read the whole word accurately.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students divide an unfamiliar word into useful syllable chunks and read each chunk with the expected vowel sound. They blend the chunks smoothly and correct a misread word using its spelling pattern.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may split a vowel team between syllables or pronounce each vowel separately. They may treat final e as its own syllable, miss r-controlled vowels, or overlook endings such as le and tion.
How to Assess It
- Give each student this list: picnic, robot, compete, rainbow, market, candle. Have students mark the syllable breaks and read each word aloud.
