What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students break longer words into syllables. They use vowel and consonant patterns in each part, then blend the parts to read the whole word. They check whether the pronunciation makes sense.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can divide an unfamiliar longer word into readable parts and use the vowel patterns to pronounce it. The student blends the parts smoothly and corrects a pronunciation that does not make sense in context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may split between letters that belong together, such as a vowel team or consonant digraph. They may use a short vowel sound in every syllable or pronounce a silent final e. Some students read each part correctly but struggle to blend the parts smoothly.
How to Assess It
- Give students the words sunset, robot, complete, cowboy, farmer, and candle. Ask them to mark each syllable break and read every word aloud.

Use syllable cards for sun/set, ro/bot, com/plete, cow/boy, farm/er, and can/dle; students build, divide, and read each word.
Have students answer, “Where would you divide complete, and what vowel clue helps you read each part?” then compare responses.
