What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students look for the vowel pattern in each syllable and use it to choose the likely vowel sound. They divide longer words into syllables, blend the sounds, and check whether the result is a known word.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student reads words such as cat, he, hope, boat, coin, and star without guessing from pictures. The student can mark vowel patterns, split a longer word such as rainbow, and blend each part accurately.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume every vowel has its short sound or that final e is pronounced. They may split words by letter count instead of spoken beats, or read r-controlled vowels as regular short vowels.

How to Assess It

Give students these six words: cat, me, bike, rain, cow, and fork. Ask them to underline the vowel pattern and read each word aloud.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs letter tiles to build cap, cape, kit, kite, and fork, then have them change one pattern and read each word.

  2. Write robot, picnic, and rainbow, then ask students to mark syllable breaks and explain which vowel clue helps them read each part.

  3. Play Syllable Sort with labeled word cards, and have students read each card before placing it under the matching syllable pattern.

  4. Scan a grocery flyer for milk, rice, oats, corn, and tomato, then mark the vowel clue and read each word.
