What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students break longer words into syllables. They recognize common vowel and final syllable patterns. They use those patterns to pronounce each part and blend the whole word.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately read unfamiliar multisyllabic words with several syllable patterns. They can mark the syllable breaks, explain the vowel sounds, and correct a misread word.

Common Misconceptions

Students may split vowel teams or treat every vowel as short. They may miss silent e, confuse open and closed syllables, or pronounce final stable syllables exactly as spelled.

How to Assess It

Give students basket, pilot, compete, rainbow, birthday, and candle. Have them mark syllable breaks, label each pattern, and read each word aloud.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs color-coded syllable cards to build, divide, label, and read words such as sunset, robot, inside, rainbow, market, and candle.

  2. Ask students to write how the syllable patterns helped them decode one unfamiliar word, then compare strategies with a partner.

  3. Play Syllable Pattern Bingo by calling words for students to divide and match to labeled pattern squares.

  4. Have students collect multisyllabic words from food packages, classroom signs, or library books, then mark syllable breaks and read them aloud.
