What Students Need to Do
- Students find words that explain when an action happens or how it is done. They edit sentences and drafts to add, replace, or correctly place those words.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify words such as "later," "soon," "quietly," and "carefully" in sentences. They revise drafts by adding or correcting these words so actions are clear.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse words that tell when with words that tell how. They may also place an adverb awkwardly or use an adjective, such as "quick," instead of "quickly."
How to Assess It
- Give students: "Yesterday, Mia carried the glass carefully." Ask them to circle the word telling when and underline the word telling how.

Give pairs action cards and adverb cards, then have them act out combinations such as "walk slowly" or "clap suddenly."
