What Students Need to Do
- Students edit sentences so words like however, therefore, and meanwhile connect ideas clearly. They choose a word that fits the meaning and punctuate it correctly.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose a transition that clearly shows contrast, result, sequence, or another logical link. They correctly use a semicolon or period before it and a comma after it when connecting complete thoughts.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often create a comma splice by placing only a comma before words like however or therefore. They may also choose a transition that does not match the relationship between ideas.
How to Assess It
- Give students this sentence: “Mia studied for the test, however she still felt nervous.” Ask them to correct it and explain their punctuation choice.
