What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students reread a draft with an adult and check words that show where a person, animal, or object is. They add or correct simple prepositions to make the meaning clear.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students notice when a draft needs a word that shows where something is. With adult prompting, they add or correct words such as in, on, under, beside, and behind.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse location words with naming or action words. They may also leave out words such as in, on, under, or beside, making a sentence unclear.
How to Assess It
- Give students the sentence, “The cat is the chair,” with a picture showing a cat under a chair. Ask them to add the missing word.
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Place a toy bear in, on, under, and beside a box, then have students write and edit one sentence for each position.
Show a classroom picture and ask, “Where is the backpack?” Students write an answer, then circle the word that shows location.
Play Preposition Fix-It by giving pairs sentence cards with missing location words and picture cards that show the correct choices.
Take a classroom walk, then write and edit sentences such as, “The clock is above the door,” with adult support.
