What Students Need to Do
- Students use words such as however, therefore, meanwhile, and furthermore to connect related ideas. They edit drafts so each word fits the meaning and is punctuated correctly.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose a conjunctive adverb that shows the intended relationship, such as contrast, result, addition, or time. They punctuate it correctly and revise awkward or incorrect transitions in a draft.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat conjunctive adverbs like coordinating conjunctions and create comma splices. They may omit the comma after words such as however or therefore. They may also choose a transition that does not match the relationship between ideas.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “Join these ideas with a conjunctive adverb and correct punctuation: The rain continued. We played outside.” Ask students to explain their word choice.
