What Students Need to Do: Students use words that tell when an action happens. They edit their writing so the time word and the action make sense together.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students use words such as now, later, soon, today, and yesterday to make timing clear. They can reread a draft and add or correct a time word where needed.
Common Misconceptions: Students may choose a word that tells where or how instead of when. They may also pair a time word with a verb that does not match, such as “Yesterday I will play.”
How to Assess It: Give students “I read my book.” Ask them to revise it with a word that tells when, then circle the added word.

Lesson moves

Give pairs sentence strips and time word cards, then have them match and read sensible combinations aloud.
Ask, “What did you do yesterday, and what will you do tomorrow?” Students write two sentences and underline the time words.
