- Students choose books that interest them and are a manageable reading level. They read quietly on their own, stay focused, and build the time they can keep reading.

- A student chooses a book that matches their interests and reading ability without teacher help. They begin promptly, stay focused for the agreed time, and can share a detail from the reading.
Common Misconceptions
- Some students choose only by the cover or pick books that are far too hard. Others switch books repeatedly, flip pages without reading, or think they must finish every book they start.
How to Assess It
- Place several books on a table and ask each student to choose one, read for 10 minutes, then write the title and one detail they learned or enjoyed.

Ways to Teach It
Set out labeled book baskets, have students preview three books, choose one, place a bookmark, and read quietly for 12 minutes.
After reading, students write why they chose the book and name one action that helped them stay focused.
