- Students find words, phrases, sounds, or lines that an author repeats. They explain why the repetition was used and what effect it has on the reader.

- Students point to a repeated word, phrase, sound, or line in a text. They explain how it emphasizes an idea, creates rhythm, or shows strong feeling.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may identify any word that appears twice, even common words such as “the” or “and.” They may spot repetition but not explain that it adds emphasis, rhythm, or a strong feeling.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short poem with one repeated phrase. Ask them to circle the phrase and write, “The author repeats this because _____.”

Give pairs a short poem and colored counters, then have them place a counter on every repeated word or phrase.
Read a repeated line aloud and ask, “Why did the author want us to hear this more than once?”
