What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students respond to stories, information, images, and spoken sources through talk, writing, or drawing. They make personal connections, retell key ideas in order, and support responses with details. They also use new words from the source.

What Mastery Looks Like

After reading, listening, or viewing, the student gives an accurate beginning, middle, and end retell. The student writes a brief response and supports it with a picture or text detail. New vocabulary is used correctly in speech or writing.

Common Misconceptions

Students may tell a personal story without linking it to the source. They may give an opinion without naming a supporting detail. Retells may skip major events, change the order, or include every small detail.

How to Assess It

Read a short picture book aloud. Give students an exit slip asking for a three-part retell, one connection, one supporting detail, and one new vocabulary word.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs picture cards from a familiar story to sequence, then have them retell the story using the ordered cards.

  2. Ask, “What did this source remind you of, and which detail created that connection?” Students discuss, then write one sentence.

  3. Play Evidence Match by having students pair opinion cards with picture or sentence details that support each opinion.

  4. Read a school lunch menu, then have students write one fact and one personal connection using a new food word.
