What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students solve addition and subtraction stories with totals and quantities no greater than 10. They model result-unknown changes, total-unknown combinations, and ways to split a total into two parts.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student models 5 birds joined by 3 more and finds 8, or 9 blocks with 4 removed and finds 5. The student connects the model to the story and answer.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose an operation from one word without acting out the situation. They may count the starting set again after adding or remove objects from the wrong quantity.
How to Assess It
- Tell students: Six frogs sit on a log and two jump away. Ask how many remain and require an object or drawing model.

Ways to Teach It
Act out result-unknown joining and separating stories with counters, then draw the action and state the answer.
Ask students to explain what changed in a story and how their model shows it.
Play story-model match with result-unknown changes, total-unknown combinations, and stories asking for two parts of a total.
Solve snack, toy, or playground stories by moving real objects and recording the result with a drawing.
