What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students add and subtract with totals and starting amounts no greater than 10. They use objects, drawings, fingers, or equations to find and show each result.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student uses counters or a drawing to show 6 + 3 = 9 and 9 - 4 = 5. The student explains how the model matches each equation without relying on memorized recall.

Common Misconceptions

Students may count the starting group again when adding or remove the wrong number when subtracting. They may also switch the operation sign or produce a result outside the modeled quantity.

How to Assess It

Give the student counters and ask for models of 7 + 2 and 8 - 3. Then ask the student to write a matching equation for each model.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use counters on a ten-frame to build and solve addition and subtraction equations whose quantities stay within 10.

  2. Ask students how a drawing for 7 - 2 shows both the starting amount and the amount taken away.

  3. Play equation draw by choosing two number cards and an operation card, then modeling every valid within-10 result.

  4. Add or remove plates at a pretend snack table and record each change with an equation within 10.
