What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students add and subtract within 20 using flexible strategies. They count on, make a ten, decompose through ten, use related facts, or create an easier equivalent calculation.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student solves 8 + 6 by making 10 and then adding 4 to get 14. The student solves 13 - 5 by subtracting 3 to reach 10 and then subtracting 2.

Common Misconceptions

Students may apply a strategy mechanically without preserving the quantities or stop after reaching 10. They may use a known fact that is not equivalent to the original expression.

How to Assess It

Ask students to solve 9 + 7 and 14 minus 6 with a strategy other than counting every object. Require a drawing or equation that shows the steps.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use ten-frames and counters to make a ten or decompose through ten for sums and differences within 20.

  2. Ask students which strategy fits 8 + 7 best and why.

  3. Play strategy sort by matching within-20 expressions to counting, make-ten, decomposition, or related-fact examples.

  4. Find changing totals in a snack or supply context and explain the chosen mental strategy.
