What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students add and subtract within 1,000 using concrete models or drawings and place-value strategies. They connect the model and strategy to a written representation with words, pictures, or numbers.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student solves 436 + 287 or 652 - 318 with a base-ten model or drawing. The written steps match the hundreds, tens, and ones shown in the model.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may record an answer that does not match their model. They may align digits incorrectly or exchange units without showing the place-value relationship.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to solve 473 - 258 using a drawing or base-ten model and a matching written representation. Require an explanation of each exchange.

Ways to Teach It
Model three-digit addition and subtraction with base-ten blocks, then sketch and label the same exchanges on paper.
Ask students to explain how their written steps show the hundreds, tens, and ones in the model.
Play model-method match with base-ten drawings, equations, and written strategies for calculations within 1,000.
Track inventory added to or removed from a collection of fewer than 1,000 items using a model and written method.
